Setting start or end dates within MyCourses can affect what the students can see and access within the Course Content area but it also affects can students can see and access within the Submission Review Tab area. The submission review tab provides access to the dropboxes, discussions, and quizzes lists. When you place a start or end date on these items within the Course Content area, it affects the tools within the Submission Review Tab area. If you set the dates on dropboxes, discussions, or quizzes via the Submission Review Tab area, it will affect these items within the Course Content area because these tools are linked to each other. This tutorial show you what happens when you place dates on Modules, dropboxes, discussions, and quizzes and how these affect the student’s view of these items.

There are 4 scenarios below that you should read and watch the video tutorial for each.

Scenario 1 - Placing Dates on a Module:

Video Tutorial:

What can Students access and see when Placing Dates on a Module (3:47)

Explanation:

When you place a start or end date on a module, the students cannot access any content, discussions, dropboxes, or quizzes within that module. The instructions on discussions and dropboxes are also hidden. However, if you do not have dates on each individual discussion, dropbox, or quiz, the students will still be able to access these items via the Submission Review Tab. Consequently, it is important if you wish to restrict the student’s access to these items, you need to place dates on each individual discussion, dropbox and quiz. Therefore, unless you really want to restrict the students access to the module content, it is best not set dates on the individual modules because you have to place the same dates on each individual discussion, dropbox, and quiz. This can add extra work and time when setting up your courses for each term.

Scenario 2 - Placing Dates on a Discussion Topics:

Video Tutorial:

What can Students access and see when Placing Dates on a Discussion Topics (4:04)

Explanation:

When you place a start or end date on a discussion topic within the Course Content area it will also place the same dates on the discussion topic within the Submission Review Tab area. Within the Course Content area, the students will not have not be able to click on discussion topic link until the start date is reached or after the end date passes. They will also not be able view the instructions for the discussion topic. Within the Submission Review Tab area, the discussion topic will be hidden from the students view until the start date passes and after the end date has past. This means that after the end date passes, students will no longer be able to view their posts or other students posts. If you want to the students be able to access their posts or other students’ posts after the discussion closes, you would want to set a something called Locking and not set start or end dates. To set locking options, you need to do this via the Submission Review Tab. View the tutorial on how to lock a discussion topic for more information.

Scenario 3 - Placing Dates on a Dropbox:

What can Students access and see when Placing Dates on a Dropbox (3:24)

Within the Course Content area, the students will not have not be able to click on dropbox link until the start date is reached or after the end date passes. They will also not be able view the instructions for the dropbox. Within the Submission Review Tab area, the student cannot click on the dropbox link nor see the instructions. They will see the date the dropbox opens. If you change the dates within the Submission Review Tab area, these changes will be reflected within the Course Content area because these are linked to each other. After the end date, passes the students can still review their submission and feedback but only via the Submission Review Tab.

Within the Course Content area, the students will be able to click on quiz link but will not see the Start Quiz button until the start date has been reached.
