The Best Place to Set Dates within MyCourses

Description

One of the most important questions that mycourses4faculty support team hears all the time: Where should I set the dates for my course: "In the Content Area or the Submission Review Area"? The answer is not an easy one because it depends on a number of factors and personal preference. Plus, there is actually another place to add or delete all the dates on all content. It is a tool called Manage Dates. It is really up to you which area you use. Please review the information below on each area and the things to consider:

Course Content Area Considerations:

  1. You can set all three dates: Start, Due, or End Dates on all content.
  2. The dates set are automatically added to the calendar whether you want to be added or not. You have no choice. Remember that if you add just a start date, that date will appear on the calendar. If you add both a start and end date, only the end date will appear on the calendar. If you add only a due date, that date will appear on the calendar. If you set both a due and end date, both will appear on the calendar.
  3. In order to set the dates, you have to navigate through each of the modules to find the quizzes, dropboxes, and discussion topics. Then click on Bulk Edit or click on the context menu next to each item and choose Edit Proprieties In-place to add the dates. This could time consuming.
  4. Setting the dates on the discussion topics will set the topic's visibility which means if you sent an end date, the students will not be able their post or other student posts after the end date passes. Please review the tutorial on Setting Dates on Discussion Topics to learn more about this subject.

Submission Review Area Considerations:

  1. You can set only start and end dates on quizzes and discussion topics but not due dates. Dropboxes are the only tool that allows you set all three date types.
  2. The dates are not automatically added to the calendar. However, there is a checkbox that allows you send the dates to the calendar. Remember that if you set both start and end dates, only the end date will appear on the calendar. If you set only a start date, that date will appear on the calendar.
  3. You have to access to all the quizzes, dropboxes, and discussion topics in one area without having to know which module each is located. This makes it easier to manage setting the dates on multiple items.
  4. Setting the dates on the discussion topics is a special case because you can visibility or locking options. Please review the tutorial on Setting Dates on Discussion Topics to learn more about this subject. These options are only seen when entering dates via the Submission Review area.

Manage Dates Area Considerations (access to this tool is via the Edit Course tab on the Navbar):

  1. You can only set start and end dates. Due dates cannot be set on any piece of content even for dropboxes.
  2. The dates are not automatically added to the calendar. However, there is a checkbox that allows you send the dates to the calendar. Remember that if you set both start and end dates, only the end date will appear on the calendar. If you set only a start date, that date will appear on the calendar.
  3. This area may be the easiest in terms of dealing with dates in your course because you can add or delete dates on any piece of content. There are also very powerful filter and search features that make it easy to find the items you need to update. Please review the tutorial on the Manage Dates tool.
