What is the Difference between Start, Due and End Dates?

There are multiple ways to set dates within MyCourses. This tutorial will explain the difference between start, due, and end dates. It is important that you understand how these dates affect the student's experience. Below is an explanation of each of three possible dates that you can set within the Course Content area.

 

Step-by-Step

  • Start Date - students will not be able to access content, submit to a dropbox, post to a discussion, or take a quiz until this date is reached. Discussions have availability restriction options that allow you to control what a student can see or do before the start date. 
  • Due Date - If only a due date is set on a learning activity (no start/end date) students will be able to access content, submit to a dropbox or take a quiz at any time. When the due date is reached, students will still have access to all content including quizzes, dropboxes, or discussion topics. Dropboxes are the only item where you could see a submission flagged as late. Quizzes that have due dates set will not be flagged as late, but will have a timestamp for each student. 
  • End Date - students will not be able to access content, submit to a dropbox, post to a discussion, or take a quiz after this date has passed. They can, however, access their submissions on quizzes and dropboxes. They will not be able to view any discussion topic threads or posts after the due date if that availability option is set. If you do not set any dates, the content, discussion topics, quizzes, or dropboxes, they will always be available to the student. You also have a choice to set either the start, due or end date, or any combination of the three. In most cases, faculty should use only the start and end dates if you wish to restrict content, discussion topics, dropboxes, or quizzes when setting dates. The due date should only be used when you do not want to restrict the students' access to content, discussion topics, dropboxes, or quizzes but want to provide an idea of when the items are due.
